“Tsukaeshi mono” ( 仕えし者)
Askeladd has Thorkell on his tail and his own people given up and surrounding him. It seems totally true that Askeladd’s luck has finally left him.
This episode is hard to put into words.
It was super bloody and saw the end of Askeladd’s group completely, it also did its best to remind us how tall and scary Thorkell is even in the eyes of hardened warriors. Another thing it did was kind of show that really difficult to explain relationship between Thorfinn and Askeladd as well as having some actual funny moments because let us not forget that Thorkell is the craziest person in the world.
Ever since they truly came back to England and started this whole thing with Thorkell the show has done its best to tell us how good a warrior Askeladd is. How smart, how in control, how much of a warrior even in his old age he truly is. We’ve seen his past, we’ve seen his vision for the future and we’ve seen the lengths he’ll go to do what he wants. In this episode alone he kills so many of his former men before being shot down himself all in the name of making Canute into the true king of England.
There is so much you want to say and no words to describe it.
It was so beautiful.
It was so Viking.
Their culture was one of Warriors. They believed fighting and killing was important and they were proud to die in battle. Askeladd’s men had lost that edge and turned on each other because they started to fear death whilst Thorkell’s men enjoyed the battle still, there was blood staining the snow and dead bodies everywhere yet Thorkell’s men were cheering the idea of a duel between him and Thorfinn.
What can you say about it?
It ended with Thorfinn riding in to save Askeladd because of course he has to be the one that kills him. Thorkell didn’t seem like he wanted to kill Askeladd anyway and I was kind of looking forward to hearing a conversation between the two but instead we’re going to see another battle between Thorkell and Thorfinn and that is OK with me.
Regardless of his need to kill Askeladd there is a bit of me that truly believes one of the reasons that Thorfinn really rushed back is because as I’ve been saying they have a really weird father/son relationship and whilst I guess one day Thorfinn thinks he’ll be able to kill Askeladd he also probably doesn’t.
I don’t know but this episode was really something good.
