Wrestling Hub Update : August

Two shows in August, CPW down in Bodmin and Pride in Penzance. Actually on time for a change with my picks from those two nights!

MALE WRESTLER OF THE MONTH

DANNY WALSH // CHRIS ANDREWS // ULTIMO TIGER // JOSH KNOTT // VINCENT “MAD DOG” ANDREWS

Its kinda hard this month even though its only been two shows there are hell of a lot of guys that I could pick. DANNY WALSH had a fantastic match against PJ Black in Bodmin, it was a great championship match and had a fantastic finish with Black beating Walsh just to challenge him to another match as he knew there had been interference and losing the belt back to Danny. It was a fantastic match. If that ended the show perfectly then it was started just as well by MAD DOG of the Firm, winning the chance to take on the CPW Trophy holder in December. The whole evening belonged to the Firm really, we went down to Bodmin not to see Black who we’d seen the month before but the Firm who had impressed us so much at LEP we just had to see them again and Mad Dog not only started off the evening throwing Jason King from the ring for disrespecting Miss Cornwall Galaxy but then won his match and was out all over the rest of the night.

For Pride CHRIS ANDREWS who is always a must see guy not only had a brilliant match against Big Grizzly but made the Championship match in Plymouth much more interesting by coming out to save Ryan just to attack him afterwards. Penzance was a bit of a nightmare for Pride but the last minute main event made up for everything, ULTIMO TIGER, who has been nominated nearly every month and been named wrestler of the month twice, and JOSH KNOTT tore up the house. Scotty Essex was also involved in the house but possibly down to injury didn’t do much in the ring leaving it to these two.

Some different names in there, will Tiger be able to be the first guy I pick three times? Guy was on fire and proved why he’s one of the best at what he does but there have been some great performances in August.

TAG TEAM OF THE MONTH

THE FIRM & MAXIMO JR // THE MUNCHKINS // THE MAGNUMS // HOUSE OF BONES

There was only one true tag team match I saw and that was in Penzance where THE MAGNUMS got to face HOUSE OF BONES (Gideon & Lomaxx) to the Pride Tag Team Championship Trophies. It was a fun match, they work so well against each other and it was a match I couldn’t wait to see. Its a match that has to happen again, I have a feeling, not just because Pride don’t have too many tag teams, that the Magnums will be the guys to finally snatch those trophies from House of Bones but it wasn’t quite their time in Penzance.

To bulk it up a little I’ve added the two teams in the Six-Man tag match in Bodmin too. THE FIRM & MAXIMO vs JASON KING & ADAM FLINT & FERGY FRESH, lovingly named Team Munchkin. As I said above, we went to Bodmin to see more of the Firm and of course I’d pay good money just to see Jason King talk let alone fight (we got to see both in Bodmin.) The match was one of my favourites full of really talented young guys all of who are a credit to CPW and LEP. The Munchkins won the match but the Firm and Maximo won the war.

MATCH OF THE MONTHΒ

DANNY WALSH vs PJ BLACK // ULTIMO TIGER vs JOSH KNOTT vs SCOTTY ESSEX // MEAN MARC MANSON vs DIMITRI IVANOV

How the hell do you choose?! DANNY WALSH vs PJ BLACK was one of the best matches I’ve seen all year. Danny is one hell of a wrestler and PJ Black is seriously amazing, it was a big challenge for the LEP Champion but Danny held his own all match long. Honestly was left with my mouth hanging open by the end of it as it was just a fantastic match.

Already said above that ULTIMO TIGER vs JOSH KNOTT vs SCOTTY ESSEX was a great match. Sadly it is the last match for Essex with Pride, he did kinda tell me at the Meet & Greet he wouldn’t be back and announced he was leaving the company not long after. Not that it was a bad match, there are plenty of better outing for Essex though and he’ll be greatly missed. The highlight of the match was just the intensity between Knott and Tiger AFTER Essex had been eliminated, before then Essex was calling the shots, bossing Knott around and generally being his naturally charming self, when he went the match exploded to the point that Tiger was just finding high places to jump off of to try and put Knott down. We went to Penzance for Tiger vs Sami Callihan and I still, hand over my heart, say this match is better then that match probably would have been. Maybe not for Tiger who probably would have preferred facing up against someone like Callihan but as a fan it was just bloody fantastic and I’m so happy I got to witness it.

The other match is the BODMIN STREET FIGHT between MEAN MARC MANSON & DIMITRI IVANOV. Seen a few street fights, no-DQ matches and so on this year, including one with Tiger and Bram which ended up in a Morrisons car park. There was something about this one though that just made it heads and shoulders above the others. I wouldn’t say they were particularly better wrestlers or anything and obviously it didn’t have OMG moments like watching a wrestling match in a car park but it was just a fun match. It made me cringe, at one point we were real worried that Manson had hurt himself, but at the end of the match it was the stand out match of the night.

What I will give away is that out of the two I think CPW won. Much as I love Pride the evening in Penzance was marred by no-shows and a feeling of disappointment. It wasn’t the best night though I give them credit for turning their misfortune around. CPW was a much smaller show, only ever having 100 tickets for sale, it was such a friendly and fun evening even if it was a slight pain to get to. Just the atmosphere of the CPW show made it one of the best nights out. Loved both evenings though and as I always say I love all the companies I go watch down here and we’re very lucky to have a wide range all offering different experiences. We had Penzance hyped up in our heads because we wanted to see guys like Callihan, Havok and SoCal Val, it was our own fault therefore when we were disappointed they didn’t come. Still two great nights out though and you can see all both reviews here [BODMIN] and here [PENZANCE] head over the the Wrestling Hub (buttons on sidebar and above or click link at bottom of this post) to see who wins.

So yes, go see who gets it for this month!

  1. Cheers for the whole list! Didn’t realise Tiger had been nominated nearly every month or that he’d been listed either in Wrestler of the Month or Match of the Month so much! Pretty cool.
