So… I might once more have completely messed up and forgotten to do June so we’ll just do both in one. I only went to One of a Kind in June anyway so for the completist in James I shall do both months.
MALE WRESTLER OF THE MONTH
JUNE : CHARLIE GARRETT // EDDIE RYAN // SCOTTY ESSEX
Only going to one event means there is little to pick from, especially when the highlights of that night were all tag team matches.
CHARLIE GARRETT is great fun and he faced Mr Anderson in a good opening match for the One of a Kind event. As part of the Soul Society he had his boss Keizer at ring side being a pain in the ass and helped Garrett get the win in a fun match, though it ended a little sloppy. EDDIE RYAN finally won the Pride Championship in his big war with Grizzly, loved watching our home town hero win the gold after coming so close all year, it really marked the beginning of a new era for Ryan who has been kicking ass all year. Then you have SCOTTY ESSEX who usually wins this purely because I think he’s the greatest. His match up was against RVD but looking back at it I was actually a little disappointed, not with Scotty who was one of the performers of the night and had me in stitches.
JULY : JASON KING // JOSH KNOTT // TYLER HAWKE // DANNY WALSH // SCOTTY ESSEX // ULTIMO TIGER // KELLY SIXX
For July there are many more people to talk about with three events.
JASON KING was the highlight of two of the events. At LEP he kicked Dimitri Ivanov’s ass and then he kinda got manhandled by Krieger before beating him at PWA Heat Wave. It was great seeing King again after quite a while without him actually wrestling, though I do believe I was sat pretty close to him at the PWA Anniversary show and would have preferred to see him in a match then John Harding. Such is life. He has pretty much officially become my second favourite wrestler behind Scotty and I always enjoy seeing him and is going to be the number one reason I miss PWA now I’m no longer going there. JOSH KNOTT also had three really good matches. He returned to Pride in a pre-show match against Red Eagle and even though Red Eagle was a bit… meh… Josh Knott was bloody awesome. He did lose to Dave Fury at LEP and was in a tag team match at PWA Heat Wave also helping KELLY SIXX beat Chris Andrews at that event. Man do I love Josh Knott who is always so fun to watch. Of course Kelly got a nomination because that man is seriously one of the most impressive guys I’ve ever seen. I said it in March, I’ve said it every time since and I’ll continue to say it until everyone knows it. The man is amazing and his match against Chris Andrews just proved that he’s one of the most versatile guys you’ll see.
TYLER HAWKE beat Eddie Ryan in their match up for the PWA Championship which we finally got to see he was also the man of the night at LEP winning that championship before finally getting beaten in the main event by DANNY WALSH who got nominated because he’s awesome. Which is the only reason Eddie Ryan ever gets nominated so why not Danny too? Though Tyler Hawke was seriously one of the big highlights of July.
ULTIMO TIGER and SCOTTY ESSEX have pretty much won this every month. I have to nominate them else I can’t call myself biased anymore. They actually had a great Fatal Fourway against PJ Black and Mark Andrews which was just awesome.
TAG TEAM OF THE MONTH
JUNE : THE SOUL SOCIETY // HOUSE OF BONES // THE MAGNUMS
June had one of the best tag team matches I’ve seen all year, the Fatal Fourway Ladders match for Prides tag championships.
THE SOUL SOCIETY were impressive, there were a few combinations they could have had as the Soul Society have recently been growing, and they honestly were so fun to watch. They were kinda overshadowed a little but what they did do was really fun. HOUSE OF BONES were their usual dominant selves with Gideon and Lomaxx doing their best to kill everyone in their presence. They were honestly so brutal it was scary at times. THE MAGNUMS… Well they were the Magnums and it was sad that they didn’t win but it just means they’ll have to take down House of Bones the first chance they get.
JULY : THE FIRM // THE BRISTOL BOYS & JOHN HARDING // JOSH KNOTT & THE UK DOMINATOR // CHUCK CYRUS & MAX ALEXANDER
So it was the first time I saw THE FIRM, it was Mad Dog and The Enforcer and the impression they made was ridiculously perfect, to the point that I spent stupid amounts of money to go to Bodmin to see them this month. These guys worked so well together you could see why people talk about them all the time. THE BRISTOL BOYS & JOHN HARDING get nominated just because the Bristol Boys are one of my favourite tag teams and its always so much fun to see them work together. They have nearly perfect synchronisation and are instantly entertaining. The match wasn’t too bad either but it would have been much better if it had just been the Bristol Boys. JOSH KNOTT & THE UK DOMINATOR were a strange pairing yet I think it worked. Knott did most of the work whilst the UK Dominator shouted at the crowd but I loved it and as I said above Knott is one of the most fun wrestlers to watch anyway. They were up against MR MASSIVE CHUCK CYRUS & MAX ALEXANDER. I’m still not sold on Alexander but him teaming with Mr Massive who was just so funny to watch made him work this one time out. It all kinda just worked this time out.
MATCH OF THE MONTH
JUNE : TAG TEAM LADDER MATCH // EDDIE RYAN VS BIG GRIZZLY
So there are only two matches I want to nominate for June and that is the fantastic LADDER MATCH at One of a Kind as well as the CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH.
EDDIE RYAN VS BIG GRIZZLY
“It is a match that you just have to watch.Ryan knocks it out of the park every time he’s in the ring and the belt going to him was only ever going to be a matter of time. Guy deserves it so much. Honestly any match with him in it is worth double the price of your ticket. Him and Grizzly just tore the place up and it was hard to see how any match afterwards would top that.”
TAG TEAM LADDER MATCH
“What a great match as well! I love tag team matches and this was just so very fun. All the three actual teams were so great together and Williams and Jones was a fun wild card that went completely wrong. All the guys in the match took a beating. Watching Gideon crawl up the ladder slowly was crazy. Great use of the ladders too, there was so much action all over the place that you never could figure out what to watch. So much fun though.”
JULY : HOUSE OF BONES VS THE MAGNUMS & HORNSWOGGLE // SCOTTY ESSEX VS ULTIMO TIGER VS PJ BLACK VS MARK ANDREWS // JASON KING VS DIMITRI IVANOV // TYLER HAWKE VS DAVID FURY VS DANNY WALSH VS EDDIE RYAN // JASON KING VS KRIEGER // EDDIE RYAN VS TYLER HAWKE
There are way too many good matches during July and it was hard to even just pick seven matches out of the ones I’ve seen.
HOUSE OF BONES VS THE MAGNUMS & HORNSWOGGLE
Like seriously… So many people I talked to kinda were interested in seeing Swoggle but at the same time didn’t think it would make a good match up. We were wrong because it was one of the most entertaining yet bloody fantastic matches at Heroes and Legends 3. The Magnums and House of Bones are two of the reasons you must go and see Pride at the moment, Swoggle fit right in with the Magnums then again I think as long as you don’t take life too seriously anyone could work well with the Magnums. It was a great opening for the show…. Or at least for those that didn’t have to sit through Knott vs Red Eagle. It had some funny moments, it had some great athleticism from Riley and showed off the mean side of House of Bones. One of the best matches of the entire night.
SCOTTY ESSEX VS ULTIMO TIGER VS PJ BLACK VS MARK ANDREWS
I was actually shocked that Tiger won back the Catch Division trophy but that was a great ending to a brilliant match. What I loved so much was that it had four really great guys in the match but it never felt crammed or too busy. Essex really stood out in the match and it was great seeing Black and Andrews live for the first time. The match was just filled with talent and it stood out so much in a night of really good matches. The best Catch Division match this year by far.
JASON KING VS DIMITRI IVANOV
There were some really cool matches at the LEP Plymouth show and Jason King, as he always tends to, pretty much stole the show. Ivanov was fun to watch but it really was King that made the match. I’ve always been a fan of King and this was the first match I’d seen with him for a long time and boy was it a impressive match. It got overshadowed by the main event of that night but it was the second best.
TYLER HAWKE VS DAVID FURY VS DANNY WALSH VS EDDIE RYAN
I’d never heard of David Fury before tonight but the other three in a match was bound to be the best match of the night, just so happened Fury was every bit as awesome and the match was amazing. I was kinda sad to see Hawke lose the match as he’d been brilliant all night and after getting so far and being in the last two after winning the title anyway earlier in the night in a triple threat I kinda of wanted him to beat Danny but it wasn’t to be. These guys really went out and ended a great night on the biggest high they can and with so much talent its obvious why it would be in the nominations. I haven’t even got started on how great Eddie Ryan is… Don’t start me though I’ll never stop.
JASON KING VS KRIEGER
Been waiting for this match since King started messing about with Reeves and getting involved in stuff that has nothing to do with him. The match didn’t disappoint. Unlike the Ivanov match it was a good chance to see the difference between King the first time I saw him and now. Whereas beforehand he was funny but sometimes the funny stuff could sometimes overshadow his ability and to be fair quite often Mark Walsh who was tagging with him was the one that you couldn’t take your eyes off of. Its hard to remember that now though as King not only is the most entertaining and charismatic person but one of the most talented guys too. He’s just a natural entertainer. This match once again proved it. His reaction to everything was brilliant and to be honest even though he got beat up a lot he looked like he really could have won the match even without his munchkin sidekick Adam Flint. My niece cried because she didn’t want to boo him but everyone else was and I was with her on that one. It was the performance of the night by far.
EDDIE RYAN VS TYLER HAWKE
This was the match we’d been waiting for for what felt like forever. When we finally got it it didn’t disappoint at all. Tyler Hawke is a great champion and whilst Eddie Ryan possibly is the better wrestler and very nearly beat Hawke it was his determination and attitude that won the match. It was a great clash and so interesting to watch develop. I can’t wait to see them in another match. For a first defence Hawke had a big hurdle to beat and he did and I loved the way he beat Ryan. Hopefully its a sign of what is to come for Hawke because he really is the man in PWA at the moment.
Those are the nominations and the winners are all up on the wrestling hub so head on over if you wanna know who won. I’ve already been to one show this month, going to another tomorrow and at least one more before the month is out. Now James can stop sending me hate mail on Tumblr and get on with his life.
