Well Qualifying was a event in some unspeakable way. I’m not sure the idea of “shaking up the grid” with it really worked all it managed to do was end Qualifying with 3 minutes on the clock still.
Its the race that counts thought.
PRE-RACE : DANIIL KVYAT
Daniil caused a aborted start and his car stopped completely. That is pretty much the second time this has happened for him in Australia, I’m pretty sure he just doesn’t want to go race in Australia.
The two Ferrari’s had a hell of a start. Vettel stormed in between the two Mercedes and got the lead, Kimi came up from behind into the first corner and it ended up with Pole Sitter Hamilton all the way back down in like 6th. There was a coming together in the midfield which ended with Magnussen having to pit with a puncture.
Yesterday all people could talk about was how easy Hamilton is possibly going to have it once more but it doesn’t look like he will have it his way when it comes to the race.
Also a great start for Verstappen who glued himself behind Rosberg.
Well I was doing my best not to fall in love with any of the rookies, I kind of felt like my love of F1 was slowly dying and didn’t want another reason to stay but man have I fallen in love with him. His fight with Bottas was nice, good clean racing and nice to see.
VALTTERI BOTTAS LAP 15
So on Lap 15 Bottas started to go very slowly and was being overtaken left, right and centre. He went right past the pits though and carried on. It was strange.
FERNANDO ALONSO / ESTEBAN GUTIERREZ LAP 17 RED FLAG
Well you saw the end wreckage of the crash in turn 3. You just saw Gutierrez in the gravel and then the camera swooped out to the most horrifying picture of a smashed up McLaren you could ever hope to see. Thankfully Alonso was out of the car as fast as anything. He just looked like he just went over the back wheel after mistiming the breaking of Gutierrez.
Nice show of Sportsmanship by Gutierrez running over to check on Alonso afterwards too.
Ricciardo and Verstappen were the most fighty but it didn’t really do anything. Hamilton ended up in 7th and it looked like his strategy might have been doomed with the red flag.
KIMI RAIKKONEN ON FIRE
Problems with Kimi’s car sent him into the pits where by the time he parked it was on fire.
PIT STOP WOES MAX VERSTAPPEN LAP 33
Verstappen has had a great race but unfortunately for him it seemed to be a problem coordinating what was going on in the pit stop which dropped him right back down the grid and behind his team mate Sainz.
I have to say though that I am pretty impressed that he was very grumpy on the radio just afterwards. I always thought that Max was too small and quiet for that kind of thing.
PIT STOP WOES SEBASTIAN VETTEL LAP 35
Vettel had to stop again, something that Rosberg didn’t look like he had to do again and then when he got into the Pit his left front wheel got stuck. Another guy with another brilliant race but strategy played a big part in ruining it a little for him. Still the rest of their
PALMER / SAINZ / VERSTAPPEN
I liked Edwards pointing out that the three of them probably never raced against each other. Palmer being a GP2 driver, Sainz a Renault 3.5 and Verstappen coming from nowhere.
Some great racing from the three of them chasing each other. You want to know what was sad? The moaning of Verstappen got Sainz told if he doesn’t keep pushing they’d pit him. It got both of them fired up though and it was nice to see them up against each other.
MARCUS ERICCSON LAP 45
Another DNF as he slowly trundled along which was actually one of the reasons the Toro Rosso pair got so close to each other. The drive train was broken apparently.
PALMER / SAINZ / VERSTAPPEN … AGAIN
Lap 42 Sainz gets through on Palmer and then we nearly had three cars into a corner as Verstappen charged through too. Sad for Palmer but also a great debut for him.
CLOSING LAP BATTLE FOR P2
In the closing laps Rosberg had his gap and it didn’t really matter but Hamilton and Vettel were very close on track.
MAX VERSTAPPEN ENDING ON A LOW
Not a LOW low but for a guy who had a pit error, then got frustrated and was moaning on the radio it wasn’t really that surprising that he then tagged the back of Sainz with only a handful of laps to go.
SEBASTIAN VETTEL ENDS THE DRAMA
The last bit of “drama” we had was Vettel going off after locking up his tyres. Thankfully for Ferrari he just lined himself back up and carried on.
WINNER : Nico ROSBERG
2nd : Lewis HAMILTON
3rd : Sebastian VETTEL
(4th : RIC 5th : MAS 6th : GRO 7th : HUL 8th : BOT 9th : SAI 10th :VES)
If you aren’t familiar with our wrestling blogs (which you probably won’t be) we always leave them with a final thoughts part.
To be honest I’ve always felt like you can’t really tell the rest of the season off of Australia. Its one of those strange tracks and you can get some good results for some drivers who then don’t have another good one for ages.
The race itself was a lot of fun, or at least it was in highlight package. I think this whole half the races live and half of them not live stuff kills my love for it too as my Twitter time line was just full of anime talk and wrestling talk with all the F1 stuff long gone.
Impressed by Haas, I knew that Grosjean wouldn’t let me down! Man is he a great driver, he improves year by year and is a real catch for any team. Haas needs to look after him.
REALLY impressed by Palmer, no heroics but some good racing.
So happy to see Alonso walk away and then later on walking around the paddock with a smile on his face.
Interested to see where McLaren really are this year and Renault.
This smile on my face though?
Nico Rosberg starts the season he NEEDS to start it. With a win. The Ferrari’s looking vicious too and hopefully we have a three or four man race to the championship. Would love Rosberg to win it all this year but I love Ferrari as a team so would love to see one of the Ferrari drivers do it.
Really liked C4 coverage, will possibly love it when its live and I get to watch it with my friends. Still a lot to get used to but they seem to have given Lee the ability to ask INTERESTING questions. Maybe just because its a highlight package but I also liked the random selection of drivers DC and Lee got to talk to on the grid. Kind of hope that they send two or three people out in live races to get as many people up and down the grid as possible.
Good opening race.
