Strictly Come Dancing Week 4

Anthony and Oti left last week, a shame for Otlile who really has been a find for the show but maybe not so much for Anthony who was really being hampered by his arm.

No theme this week makes me a happy boy.

Anita & Gleb
Dancing the SAMBA to “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira
Judges Scores : 6 / 7 / 7 / 7 = 27
My Score : 6

It wasn’t her best dance, even though you could tell she was enjoying herself it didn’t really feel like she was at a party or if it was a party then it was one she very obviously didn’t want to be at and was looking for whatever possible escape route she could use.

Sometimes it felt like she got stuck to the floor and had to physically pull her foot from the floor, like there was velcrow on the bottom of her feet. It made it look a little starty-stoppy. I’m not sure why we had a backwards Gleb special on the floor this week, I’m not sure I ever want to see him do the possessed body thing ever again.

For me it was missing something, I don’t know what. I rate Anita very highly but I’m in two minds over Gleb and his choreography. There is something in it that I just don’t like but at the same time I love it. It was the first time in four weeks that I didn’t really “get” them as a couple either.

Everyone has one of those weeks though.

Daniel & Kristina
Dancing the AMERICAN SMOOTH to “Fly me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra
Judges Score : 5 / 6 / 6 / 6 = 23
My Score : 3

How can a man have so much personality yet have none at all?

If you don’t understand what I mean watch Daniel. Everything about him is boring. Everything. The jokes are old hat, his expression is always the same, his voice is trying its hardest to put me to sleep.

Yet…. Yet I can’t take my eyes off him. He’s charming, he’s funny and even though my brain is telling me “no he’s boring hate him” I love him and everything about him. He’s taken the competition in the right way and grabbed it with both hands and is truly doing his best to learn to dance. It isn’t about the comedy or doing flashy dances to get the voters on side, in fact Craig told him even if it meant being worse technically he’d prefer more flashy stuff.

The American Smooth felt like a anti-climax that is true. I felt they never really got started, there was something there that was lacking but I do feel like Daniel is putting more into learning the dances and the character for the dance then some others and I love him.

Kristina is doing wonders with him.

Kirsty & Brendan
Dancing the PASO DOBLE to “Beautiful Day” by U2
Judges Score : 4 / 6 / 6 / 6 = 21
My ScoreΒ : 1

No longer am I excusing her as just being nervous she just can’t for the life of her get the rhythme of the dance or the strength in her core to look like anything other then a rag doll being placed around the place by Brendan.

In fact it was so bad this time with her nearly constantly in Brendan’s hold that I was sat watching the TV getting angry that she was in my way of watching Brendan dance.

Every part of her body seemed to be doing something different to the part it was attached to. I’ll give her that the music was dreadful for a Paso and therefore even if she was trying to put drama and attack into it you would never have been able to tell underneath the wailing of Fake Bono but if we’re being honest you could have had the most dramatic music in the world playing and the only drama her Paso caused was the question of when she was going to get too dizzy and fall over.

Georgia & Giovanni
Dancing the QUICKSTEP to “Reach” by S Club 7
Judges Scores : 7 7 9 8 = 31
My Score : 8

I admit that I liked last weeks Rumba for the same reasons the judges didn’t. I don’t like the Rumba as a dance finding it boring and the celebs never really pulling off the story telling. It feels extremely fake and embarrassing most of the time. Theirs was the only one I’ve ever liked.

Their Quickstep was one of the best I’ve seen and I hope that we get to see them do it again when her posture and technique are a bit better because it was lovely. Giovanni did the perfect thing when it comes to Len’s comments last week and came out with a dance full of technique, in hold, moving across the floor with nothing flashy about it. Everything about it was just pure class.

Yeah OK she has a lot of room for improvement and out of the “front runners” she’s possibly the weakest technically but I loved it. I have loved all their dances.

Jeremy & Karen
Dancing a JIVE to “Splish Splash” by Bobby Darin
Judges Scores : 3 / 6 / 6 / 5 = 20
My Score : 1

You have to give it to him that he’s funny.

Now I’m not saying that guys with long arms and legs can’t dance because one of my all time favourite pros and the guy I hope the BBC realise should be replacing Len as head judge next year is Ian Waite who has the longest arms and legs I think I’ve ever seen and produced some of my favourite dances (including Jives) on the show. Jeremy’s arms and legs are so long though and have a mind of their own. He looked like a octopus cooking.

“A stalk that had been struck by lightening” whilst being mean was also rather perfect to describe it.

Yet I like that he loves learning the dances and goes out and gives his all and doesn’t get grumpy when people say she’s bad.

I like him.

Kellie & Kevin
Dancing a FOXTROT to “Dream a Little Dream” by Mama Cass
Judges Scores : 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 = 32
My Score : N/A

Once again I won’t score them because it isn’t really fair. I didn’t like the dance but I also now use them as my pee break.

I’m sorry to their fans but I can’t deal with them. I just can’t. Good or not their personalities rub me up the wrong way.

Jamelia & Tristan
Dancing the CHARLESTON to “Straight Up” by Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox
Judges Scores : 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 = 32
My Score : 8

This by far is her best dance.

You see the thing is I understand why others don’t like her. Not her dancing which has been patchy at best but her in general. Especially with this dance which seemed to suit her so much it just feels like she’s doing her best to portray a character that everyone at home will like and it fails and feels fake.

I personally love her and loved the Charleston. If Tristan choreographed it, I know sometimes pros need help for dances they aren’t so sure with and Charleston is one I’ve always heard gets help from outside sources, then I’m super impressed with him. I feel like they haven’t really gelled as a couple yet and Tristan hasn’t found the right way to teach her but hopefully this is the dance that sorts that out.

Then again everything that she usually does wrong in dances was used to make the Charleston right so maybe its just a fluke?

Jay & Aliona
Dancing a QUICKSTEP to “My Generation” by The Who
Judges Scores : 5 / 7 / 6 / 7 = 25
My Score : 3

After last weeks Jive (which was good sure but I found boring) this was one giant fall.

I didn’t like the choreography, of what we saw that didn’t go wrong, it was never going to beat Giovanni’s Quickstep for Georgia. Most people are blaming the music but I don’t think it was that bad. He made mistake after mistake and never turned it around, the judges said he did but he didn’t. He was out of time, his top line sunk and he looked completely lost.

Its a shame because I have liked Jay from week one. I’m a little less surprised by him now that I know he’s actually been trained in dance (I thought he was a completely novice like Anita) but I’ve enjoyed watching him (other then last week.)

We’ll see if he turns it around next week.

I do think they were over marked. This is when the marking gets on my nerves (see below in the My Thoughts section.)

Carol & Pasha
Dancing a PASO DOBLE to “Espana Cani” by Trad
Judges Score : 5 / 6 / 6 / 5 = 22
My Score : 4

This just proves what good acting and good music can do for you. She wasn’t the most in your face celeb in a Paso but she had the drama and passion that was completely missing from Kirsty’s just by adding more dramatic music.

Unlike Kirsty she didn’t spend 90% of the dance in hold either she actually danced away from Pasha and tried the dance itself.

She got four for the performance. I really liked it.

Ainsley & Natalie
Dancing the WALTZ to “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong
Judges Scores : 6 / 7 / 7 / 6 = 26
My Score : 6

What a improvement. I always thought the Latin will be Ainsley’s strength but the discipline in the Ballroom seems to reign in his enthusiasm and he really looked good out there. I thought he’d made a mistake though Len said he didn’t so I put the mark up from 5.

He hunches a little and looks like Uncle Fester and you could see him concentrating on his footwork. There were some strange looking moments but he carried on and just did what Natalie taught him whilst still staying in character as far as he had one in a Waltz.

The thing is Ainsley looks like he could actually be really good given enough time, he’ll never have that time but he could be good. I just find him entertaining to watch.

Helen & Aljaz
Dancing a SAMBA to “Doctor Beat” by Miami Sound Machine
Judges Scores : 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 = 32
My Score : 9

I was worried about her doing Latin because her first attempt was so rigid and doll like.

I didn’t need to worry because she’s worked it out and she’s improved so much. Still a little wooden in places but she looked so much more relaxed and played with the character of the dance which meant that she looked like she was having fun and at a party.

It sounds weird but I think one problem is her hairstyle in any given dance. The hairstylists seem to love making her look so elegant with her hair, which I don’t blame them, but in the party Latins it made her look out of place as weird as it sounds. With her hair down like they had it she looked like she was relaxed and going out on the town which added to the character.

My favourite dance.

Though I didn’t like the lifts much and think the dance would have been better without it.

Peter & Janette
Dancing the TANGO to “Blue Monday” by New Order
Judges Score : 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 = 32
My Score : 6

I get that they are putting Peter on last because they think fans will tune in till the end to watch him but its becoming very annoying to see him in last place so often.

Not only that but are the judges scared to upset him?

I say this because Janette has put less content in some of his dances then Giovanni did the Rumba for Georgia but regardless of what Janette’s Showdance of the week actually looks like they praise it no end.

I mean this time out fair enough it looked roughly like a Tango and as always Pete did a good job of it but I don’t get why they praise the choreography so much when Janette needs to be told to get the best out of Peter.

I honestly like Peter Andre. Even though I think he’s a bit of a prat but I think he’s honest I just don’t think he realises he comes across as a moron. I don’t think Janette is a good choreographer or a good teacher and would like to see the back of her this season.

Katie & Anton
Dancing the VIENNESE WALTZ to “If I Can Dream” by Elvis Presley
Judges Scores : 8 / 9 / 8 / 8 = 33
My Score : 9

This is the kind of content I want to see from Anton. The dance last week was appalling but Katie CAN dance and if Anton really wants to get the best out of her he needs to carry on like this.

In fact if anything it’ll make him stand out more as a choreographer and Katie as a contestant if he just went back to basics as it were. Instead of going for flashy just work on the technique.

She was more then amazing and should be proud of herself. If Anton can’t choreograph a Latin routine then honestly I feel like he should get someone to help him.

My Thoughts :

First off with the above point I was making.

Jay got 7s not because his dance deserved 7s but because 1/the judges back themselves into a corner by not using the full scale of 1-10 and 2/because he’s a great dancer and they don’t want him in danger and be a “shock” elimination. This isn’t fair on all the celebs.

Its he producers that do it though. I’ve read that they force people to cheer and boo which is pathetic and stops you from really being able to trust the judges. A 5 or lower gets booed so the good guys like Darcey and Len don’t tend to score lower even if a dance deserves it. I know it might be heartbreaking for a couple to get a 1 when they put their heart into learning a routine but if the full scale of the pads were used from Day 1 for EVERYONE then we’d at least get to Week 4 when a good dancer suddenly does a bad job and can get a bad score without everyone fretting.

One of the problems is the judges don’t judge everyone on the same scale. They’ll give someone a 7 for “giving it welly” and another a 7 because last week they were good so they know that they COULD do this dance then someone else who they are indifferent with a 6 for a bigger improvement and a better dance.

As for this week. Love seeing the improvement in the “duffers” and love seeing all of them enjoying it. It gets a little sad when the judges get really nasty to them or if they think they are better then they are, the ones we have this year are taking the competition in the right spirit and its making for interesting viewing.

At the top there is the biggest tie we’ve seen so far with the “front runners” all bunched together in first and second place. I believe this is the first time Anton has ever gotten a celeb to the top of the leader board but it was well deserved and he really honestly needs to focus on making amazing Ballrooms and get some help if he can’t choreograph the Latin.

Sad to see Jay stumble but at least it keeps him from getting boring like a lot of the people who are good from the early stages all the way through tend to end up.

Favourite dances were Helen and Katie but I loved watching most of the dances.

I apologise for any mistakes or problems in the blog, computer problems and a hurt brain after getting angry at my computer.
