This week was the week I went off the show last time out thanks to Donny Osmond. I hate theme weeks because the dances always look even less then the dances we are meant to be seeing and everything tends to be even more over marked then ever before.
Never mind. Another year and another Movie night.
Its nice to know stupid VTs aren’t just for the individual “training” videos but the beginning of the show too.
I found it pointless. OK it was nice to see some of the dancing, but lets face it all it did was make the celebs look silly. Katie who is a great dancer just stood and let people lift her about, Daniel O’Donnell did his best wax work impersonation which he’s being doing most season so far anyway and within seconds I was already completely fed up of Janette.
Carol & Pasha
Dancing the QUICKSTEP to “Wash that Man” from South Pacific
Judges Scores : 3 / 5 / 5 / 4 = 17
My Score : 1
I like Carol, I like that she gets into the dance and I like that she’s enjoying herself.
Her posture unfortunately isn’t there, she lurches over Pasha at times and looks completely strange. She really did trot about the floor and looked much more like she was skipping about. It looked odd because Pasha was dancing but whatever she was doing was not dancing and it wasn’t with Pasha and I’m not sure what was going on.
Giving her dues she’s a lovely woman and trying so hard, it doesn’t help that we don’t see any training in the VTs so unless you watch during the week you don’t get a idea of just how hard they are working. For me it looked like she’d done none which is unfair.
From her dance she deserves to be bottom two.
Anthony & Oti
Dancing the PASO DOBLE to “Eye of the Tiger” from Rocky
Judges Scores : 4 / 6 / 5 / 4 = 19
My Score : 2
If I’m honest this was the most obvious song choice in the world for him so I kind of wish they hadn’t done it. I’d have much preferred they not go for the obvious.
Oti is extremely intelligent with her choreography trying to do something with his arm to stop him from hurting himself. Unfortunately it was off putting and there was no real Paso arms because he couldn’t do it. It gets to the point where its unfair of the judges not to judge his poor performance on half his body, he might be injured but he can’t be treated differently. It was stampy, lacked drama and tension and just was bad.
Starting to be seriously disappointed with him. Not her, we’ll keep her please?
The judges backed themselves into a corner by not wanting to hurt Carol’s feelings and marked Anthony and Carol the same (well two of them) which was terrible really. He was better then Carol.
Katie & Anton
Dancing the CHACHA to “Pretty Women” from Pretty Women
Judges Scores : 4 / 6 / 5 / 5 = 20
My Score : 2
Katie has been such a great dancer so far so I look forward to her every week.
I don’t know if it was just not her dance or the lack of ability on Anton’s side but that dance was either poorly choreographed or poorly executed and that was a shame. Katie stood most of the time in the middle of the floor and didn’t do too much whilst Anton kind of wiggled around.
Good on Anton for sticking up for Katie when the judges tore her apart for content. She doesn’t choreograph the dances so why they told her off for it. I think they were horrid it SHOULD have been aimed at Anton as a fault not Katie who can only dance what she’s taught.
Kelli & Kevin
Dancing the CHARLESTON to “Catina Band” from Star Wars
Judges Scores : 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 = 32
My Score : N/A
I don’t like them and I don’t think anything will ever change that.
As that is the case I won’t mark them because that would be unfair, I just don’t like them so won’t mark them fairly. I didn’t like the dance though it suited them both perfectly. I hated the fact that as a Star Wars fan they were dancing a Star Wars themed Charleston (also one of my favourite dances) and I always knew that they’d get good comments and marks from the judges who love Kevin no matter what.
I just disliked it.
Ainsley & Natalie
Dancing the CHACHA to “Boogie Wonderland” from Happy Feet
Judges Scores : 3 / 6 / 6 / 5 = 20
My Score : 2
The complete opposite of Kelli.
I like him and I can’t help that I like him. Technically it wasn’t the greatest but the entertainment value was out of here. He got too excited and everything kind of went south dance wise very fast. I don’t care though because every time he’s on screen he just makes me smile.
He’s got natural rhythm he just needs to focus it into dancing.
Georgia & Giovanni
Dancing the RUMBA to “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre
Judges Scores : 7 / 7 / 6 / 7 = 27
My Score : 7
I felt she was unfairly judged last week. Poor girl having to do the Rumba!
I take it back though. I loved it, I thought it was a great Rumba and it was by far my favourite in Strictly history. I hate the dance usually finding it rather bland and pointless. It was a little stiff and you could tell that she was trying a little too hard but it was a story and great for it. Really like this partnership.
Len was horrid because someone got on his wick. Well standing in the middle of the floor smiling at the character isn’t much of a Quickstep you horrid old bastard but you still gave Peter a 8 last week!
Helen & Aljaz
Dancing the FOXTROT to “I Wanna be loved by You” from Some Like it Hot
Judges Scores : 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 = 32
My Score : 8
Helen is one of my favourites and I love how beautiful and classy she looks every single week.
Dance completely suited her, she looked lovely and elegant and I loved the gliding around the room. I knew that she’s be good at Foxtrot and she was lovely.
I have nothing else to say. She was lovely.
Daniel & Kristina
Dancing the CHACHA to “Summer Nights” from Grease
Judges Scores : 4 / 6 / 6 / 5 = 21
My Score : 3
Let me just say that I never thought I’d say that I love Daniel O’Donnell but I love Daniel O’Donnell.
This man can do anything if he put his mind to it. The thing is he does really well for who he is and his build and his personality but a week isn’t going to be enough to get him to the same standard. He was a little floppy and needed to be sharper and needs to be more fluid but I think he gets into the spirit. Bruno might be right that he is becoming samey but if anything it needs to be Kristina that teaches him the difference.
Much better then some and performed better then the others.
Kirsty & Brendan
Dancing the AMERICAN SMOOTH to “He’s a Tramp” from Lady and the Tramp
Judges Scores : 5 / 6 / 6 / 6 = 23
My Score : 5
I’ve felt bad for Kirsty who has obviously been struck by nerves each week so far.
There is still something floppy about her body sadly that makes her look less then elegant in hold and she has no timing whatsoever. The dance was sweet and her costume I feel hid a multitude of errors, though she did get her dress caught in the second lift which then went wrong obviously. She’s improving week on week though and she’s gaining confidence.
I thought she’d be one to watch and she is because she’s improving week on week. Just listen to the judges who for a change gave good advice.
Peter & Janette
Dancing the PASO DOBLE to “He’s a Pirate” from Pirates of the Caribbean
Judges Scores : 7 / 7 / 7 / 7 = 28
My Score : 4
I don’t mind Peter, some people hate him but I don’t mind him.
What I don’t like is Janette and the thing I hate most of all about these two is that she’s choreographed two dances that looked nothing like they were meant to look like but managed to get the highest scores twice. For a change the Paso looked like a Paso but it was terrible executed. The stamping was too much, the performance was spot on but it wasn’t a Paso performance it was a Pirate performance. His lines were all over the place, his arms were crazy, his stamping would make John Sargent proud but he got nice comments of course.
Janette is a terrible professional. Hell froze over at four 7s.
Jamelia & Tristan
Dancing the SALSA to “Heaven Must Be Missing a Angel” from Charlie’s Angels.
Judges Scores : 6 / 7 / 6 / 6 = 25
My Score : 2
Rather sad she was in the bottom two last week but her reaction to her scores was kind of the reason why.
A big improvement on her other Latin outing but there was a lack of confidence as well which you could see in the drop which was stilted. She’s a bit stiff and doesn’t flow very well but most importantly she doesn’t look like she trusts Tristan to dance with her. Anything that he had to support her with she gripped onto him with dear life or stopped to think about it. Her legs looked too wooden. Its a improvement though.
I’m still not sure on Tristan which was a shame because I thought he was the pro I really wanted back last year.
Jeremy & Karen
Dancing the CHARLESTON to “Top Hat, White Tie & Tails” from Top Hat
Judges Scores : 3 / 7 / 7 / 7 = 23
My Score : 5
Another great performer and another guy I wouldn’t mind watching just learn everything.
The guy tries. Karen gives him great dances and he works his ass off at performing at them. My main problem is his legs, he has such long legs that because sometimes he looks really wooden and like he doesn’t have knees its all I see. He’s like a broom trying to dance. But he does it with so much character and to be fair he’s improved each week and his Charleston was something to be witnessed. He’s right when he says Karen is a great teacher she really is.
Really enjoyable Charleston.
Anita & Gleb
Dancing the AMERICAN SMOOTH to “Unchained Melody” from Ghost
Judges Scores : 6 / 8 / 8 / 7 = 29
My Score : N/A
I was so confused. It was billed as a American Smooth everyone was going on about Vienesse Waltz’ I guess it was a VW American Smooth. I was really confused.
It was too theatrical for me though the confusion of what they were dancing because I missed the actual announcement also held it back and how they magically replaced her with Flavia…
I’m not scoring it because I confused myself.
Jay & Aliona
Dancing the JIVE to “Misirlou/You Can Never Tell” from Pulp Fiction
Judges Scores : 9 / 9 / 9 / 10 = 37
My Score : 9
Love Jay and he’s finally seemed to find his confidence.
It was brilliant. What more can I say?
My Thoughts :
Better then I thought, slightly better scoring from the judges though as always pissed off with Len. A great night really.
