Strictly Come Dancing Week 2

After splitting the couples nicely into two shows last week we have a mega bumper addition of Strictly this week which then ends tomorrow with the results show.

Like the two seasons we’ve attempted to cover before after announcing we would pay attention to everything we kind of didn’t so we haven’t seen any training or interviews all week. Oh well on with the show.

Jamelia and Tristan
Dancing the CHACHA to “Don’t Cha” by the Pussycat Dolls
Judges Score : 4 / 6 / 5 / 6 = 21
My Score : 2

I don’t care what anyone says about her I like her. I don’t get the abrasiveness that some people see in her I just like her. Then again please someone save us from pointless VTs.

She has no technique down and has come down purely to entertain. This worked for the judges when it came to Peter last week but will never work with a celeb like Jamelia. It just lacked any real ChaCha technique and her legs were strange. She looked like a crab which was funny because Amanda commented she was dressed like Seaweed.

I wanted to see better from Tristan this year but I don’t like his choreography and Jamelia isn’t taking on board the technique.

Daniel and Kristina
Dancing the CHARLESTON to “Let’s Misbehave” by Cole Porter
Judges Score : 5 / 6 / 6 / 6 = 23
My Score : 4

Honestly this man has changed my mind completely on him. He’s boring. He’s unexciting. The performer I rolled my eyes at when I was a kid.

You know what though he’s actually a gentleman, funny and trying his darned hardest with these dances.

He is in his 50s and he is hardly in the fitness state to keep up with someone like Kristina but you know what he is doing it. He tried to keep up the pace, he worked hard on it, he did his best to do the technique and the Charleston is hardly the dance that any beginner should be doing in week 2.

Daniel has my complete respect.

Kirsty & Brendan
Dancing the SALSA to “Can’t Touch It” by Ricki Lee
Judges Score : 5 / 5 / 5 / 5 = 20
My Score : 1

Well. Much better because she didn’t freeze and get flung around the place… Well. Not always being flung around the place.

She’s off beat more then she’s on it and Brendan didn’t pack it with much dancing but more placing herself for lifts. Its one of those dances you look at and go OMG its wonderful then remember that the show is about dancing and not lifts. Even then I thought the lifts were a lot more sloopey then people have said, I thought the final one where Brendan was dipping Kirsty down just to bring her back up again look horrendous and even though she’d made a improvement on her nerves her posture and her whole being seemed to be much like someone about to faint.

Brendan did no favours to the two of them by gobbing off after receiving their scores. It might not have been much of a score but I think he over marked his performance in his own head. It wasn’t even good choreography unless Kirsty just didn’t do 90% of the dance.

Jay and Aliona
Dancing the WALTZ to “See the Day” by Dee C Lee
Judges Scores : 7 / 8 / 8 / 8 = 31
My Score : 5

Well I’m not sure why he needed a hair cut but the performance didn’t come with the hair cut. He wore a hat most of the night but not on the dance floor so obviously she’s just made him feel more self conscious else they’d have had the hat on the dance floor. He still looks like he’s about to vomit over Aliona and there was way too much faffing about in the middle to even be considered a bloody Waltz. I hate Aliona’s choreography.

Thing is Jay is a great dancer, we can’t deny that, but even though its obvious that the judges will love him no matter what (in a twist on Matt Baker who got told off week in week out for Aliona’s terrible choreography) I personally just like seeing people dance. You dance a Waltz in hold with a little bit out of hold at the beginning and end but it feels more like the Waltz is now one long posing session as most of the time its all the celebs do.

I liked it. It just felt more of a show dance.

Iwan and Ola
Dancing the CHACHA to “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO
Judges Scores : 2 / 4 / 4 / 4 = 13
My Score : 2

I feel a little bad for Iwan, I know its just the way that the producers have decided they should look like but I do feel for him because he just can’t dance.

The judges are horrid. They forgive Peter Andre for doing nothing that looks like a ChaCha last week and then tear Iwan apart for a fun and energetic ChaCha this week. Yeah he might have put TOO much into it but that was because they were so cruel to him last week. Of course what we have to do is tear apart the bad guys and cuddle the better ones.

I liked it. It wasn’t good but I liked it. He didn’t deserve the roasting he got. Maybe he did try too hard but maybe he just genuinely didn’t want to be shot down again?

Georgia and Giovanni
Dancing the WALTZ to “Georgia on my Mind” by Ray Charles
Judges Scores : 6 / 6 / 6 / 7 = 25
My Scores : 8

Just as good as Helen’s last week. Nice technique and great performance.

There is kind of a feeling that she’s going to be “left behind” a little and from a good first week it looks more like she’ll be the Dark Horse as she’s fallen behind the other girls at least in comments by the judges. I think Giovanni is doing a good job of bringing the best out of her in the performance and we just need to work on the footwork in the ballroom. She’s a Queen of the Ballroom in the making though, she’ll prefer the Latin which might mean she’ll pick it up faster but by the look of her face when she got her scores I feel like she’ll buckle down harder in Latin from now on.

I think it was under marked greatly but then I guess I didn’t see her feet enough to judge on whether or not there was a heel lead in there.

Ainsley and Natalie
Dancing the SALSA to “Don’t Touch my Tomatoes” by Josephine Baker
Judges Scores : 6 / 7 / 7 / 6 = 23
My Score : 5

Lots of his personality in the dance. Great fun. The Latin was always going to be the best for Ainsley because it’ll play to his happy go lucky personality.

There was technique there and he got some things right, his biggest positive is of course that he has musicality to spare. Course there is the problem that he needs to actually do the right steps to go with the musicality but we’ll get there.

Him and Natalie are a great partnership and you can’t help but smile about it all. He just had the whole personality of the dance flowing out of him.

Carol and Pasha
Dancing the FOXTROT to “Isn’t This a Lovely Day” by Irving Berlin
Judges Scores : 4 / 6 / 5 / 5 = 20
My Score : 3

To say it was a improvement is a understatement but at the same time it doesn’t take much to be a improvement on the week before.

I don’t get why they had to hold that umbrella the whole time and wish it would go and doubly wish that a judge would have said that (unless I just missed them saying it.) The Foxtrot isn’t a easy dance and she managed to do a half decent one for a beginner.

Unfortunately she isn’t a very interesting competitor yet she has a big following which might mean she’ll outlast her welcome and become too much. Out of the people at the bottom of the leader board I have to say she’s my pick to go because she is just bland for me. She isn’t really able to perform the dances (and no grinning whilst wobbling about Pasha does not make her ChaCha a performance) and she’s just there to make up the numbers. I kind of wanted her to come out and leave an impression but she didn’t.

Kellie and Kevin
Dancing the CHACHA to “Don’t Go Breaking my Heart” by Elton John & Kiki Dee
Judges Scores : 6 / 7 / 7 / 7 = 27
My Score : 4

I don’t get these two. I don’t get why the people in charge are giving them music that just doesn’t go with the dances they are doing and I don’t get why people like them so much. Her Tango lacked everything a Tango should and at points was floppy and smiley and now she’s doing a ChaCha to a song more suited to a Jive or Quickstep or ANYTHING other then a ChaCha whilst being very wooden, precise and boring.

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t like Kellie’s personality in the VTs much, I have nothing against her but I’m not warming to her but I’m not warming to her dancing either and neither her Tango or her ChaCha have looked or felt like the dance they are meant to be doing.

They even hid half her ChaCha dress which was even more confusing. I was waiting for the top half to be ripped off to unveil the whole ChaCha dress and the music to change tempo or something. It didn’t.

Anthony and Otlile
Dancing the WALTZ to “If you Don’t Know Me By Now” by Simply Red
Judges Scores : 4 / 5 / 5 / 5 = 19
My Score : 4

I kind of wish he’d never done Strictly to be honest. The guy is struggling with his arm and Oti is doing her best to work around it but you can see the concentration on his face all the time to keep the pain out of his face and to keep his arm up. There are only so many dances you can use clever choreography to hide a injury before you get bored of seeing it.

He wasn’t the worst by miles, he was still pretty good and I can’t wait to see what else he’ll do in both Latin and Ballroom but he’s becoming one of those contestants that you just wish had done the show under different circumstances.

There is a lot of work to be done but I don’t think it was as bad as the judges made out.

Jeremy and Karen
Dancing the AMERICAN SMOOTH to “Happy Together” by The Turtles
Judges Scores : 3 / 5 / 5 / 4 = 17
My Score : 2

Well. It was something. There was little AS choreography in there, it seemed Karen just told him to go out and be happy which he did in buckets.

I don’t know what to say about Jeremy. I can’t stand his voice, it just reminds me of terrible politic shows that I watch from time to time and I always hear him and think OMG we’re going to be talking about Labour Party Politics in a moment and start to fall asleep before I remember he’s dancing. There is also something about his face that just makes me sit up and worry for my life.

Then again I like watching him and Karen and they leave me with a smile on my face. Kind of want to see him do a Tango or Waltz.

Katie and Anton
Dancing the TANGO to “Telephone” by Lady Gaga
Judges Scores : 7 / 7 / 7 / 7 = 28
My Score : 7

What drama! When I saw that she’d be dancing to Telephone by Lady Gaga I was so angry but the way they played it was so dramatic I forgot it was a crappy Lady Gaga song and actually thought it was a Tango piece.

I felt it was a bit too compact and didn’t use the floor as well as it could’ve done. It felt slightly more like a AT then a Ballroom Tango but it was wonderful anyway. I’m happy that Anton is taking it so seriously and that Katie just looks fabulous with anything he gets her to do.

The beginning on the chair, I know I hate faffing about but I just thought it looked like she was there to kill him. I can’t wait to see their Paso because I think they’ll set the floor on fire. She’s not perfect but like Georgia she’s got some way to go and her journey might work in her favour. Plus her and Anton are a joy together so you just like to support them. Especially if you’ve liked Anton for a while.

Peter and Janette
Dancing the QUICKSTEP to “Valerie” by The Zutons
Judges Scores : 7 / 8 / 7 / 8 = 30
My Score : 5

His Quickstep looked very little like a Quickstep.

They didn’t move at all. There was no “Quickness” about it as he spent the whole time seemingly getting ready to move. Janette is a poor choreographer but she doesn’t have to worry because the judges want Peter to win anyway.

He got 30 for doing something that looked nothing like the dance he was meant to be doing and had little difficulty in it for what he did unless I truly blink and missed it all.

Helen and Aljaz
Dancing the CHACHA to “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel
Judges Scores : 7 / 7 / 7 / 8 = 29
My Score : 7

There was something wooden about her dance though as many have said it’ll be the downfall of her ballet training. There was no give at all so it felt like she was dancing on stilts instead of legs.

I loved it though, I thought it was by far the best Latin of the night and she’s still one of my favourite couples of the year so far. There was more ChaCha content in there then in Peter’s and it was performed better then Peter’s yet as you would guess got a lower mark then Peter. I don’t think she’ll be in her comfort zone in Latin and even if she enjoys it more just her look and the way she holds herself is going to play against her because she really does just ooze the elegance and shape of Ballroom.

I’ve never really paid much attention to Aljaz if I’m honest. I’ve never really liked his partners so never saw a reason to bother with him but I’ve liked what he’s done with Helen so far and can’t wait to see them progress.

My Thoughts :

The judges seemed set on making someone cry and I do wonder if they’ve been told to score a little lower because they were horrid to some contestants and scored a lot lower then they should have considering their marks last week.

What they don’t seem to get is if you tell someone they have improved from last week but over scored them last week and give them the score they deserve this week YES you are the bad guys because you shouldn’t be over scoring PERIOD and telling someone they’ve improved yet marking them down IS a shitty thing to do.

Len is a vile man, grumpy and pointless. He marks people on whether he likes them or not. For one couple its “you did this wrong but come out and give it Welly next week” and for others its just endless nasty bile. At least the other three try to give a positive or if they don’t then they talk consistently to all contestants (yes even Bruno if you listen within all the waffle.)

I don’t get why we’re meant to think Peter is so great. I mean he’s a good performer but he’s paired with one of the weakest pros on the show. Shame as he’d have been good with someone like Natalie (who is possibly too tall for him.)

Looking forward to seeing who goes tomorrow. Could be a whole bunch of them to be honest not sure who I think deserves to go! Just hoping it isn’t someone like Jamelia who I just don’t think has shown us what she can truly do so far.
