Strictly Come Dancing Week 4

This week we step away from the themed week for another normal week of dancing. Mark was going all hip-hop in a Cha-Cha-Cha, Natalie all Jazzed up for a Quickstep and Dave brushed his hair for a Waltz.

So how did the week turn out?

So last week was a bit of a wash out, have to say that I got a little annoyed with having to “force” a theme into dances, to the point that even romantic dances felt that too much of whatever the BBC seems to think “Love” is was crowbarred into the cracks. I was not a happy viewer!

Couple by couple I’ll tell you how I felt, based from memory unfortunately. We’ll see how well the non-theme week went!

Sophie & Brendan
Foxtrot (Cheek to cheek – Irving Berlin)

I enjoyed their Foxtrot, once more it had a lot of content in it and for the first time in ballroom I felt like Sophie wasn’t being flopped about by Brendan. Too often she seems to be like a rag doll and hangs loose whilst being spun around but this week she’d really worked on it and looked controlled. Why made me love the dance was that it was a Foxtrot, there was no props or messing about, if I didn’t have the introduction I could tell (even without music) it was meant to be a Foxtrot. Too often recently dances could have been a little it of anything. Really nice Foxtrot danced really well.

My Score
I gave it a 8, or possibly in the heat of the moment  a 9. I think it was good, and I enjoyed it a lot, great fun.

No complaint whatever in that.

Fiona & Anton
Rumba (World of our own – Westlife)

Well first thing is first, whoever decided to use that song for a Rumba should be shot! I think Anton gave Fiona quite a good piece of choreography, people with more experience in dancing will probably disagree but personally I thought it was really good, but with the speed of the song, and the fact it felt like the band was singing it at twice its normal speed anyway meant that it looked like a Rumba on fast forward. Not only that but Fiona just couldn’t cope with the speed. Personally I felt she got the Rumba perfectly fine and being a slower dance if the music had been slower I think it would have been pretty awesome, but speeding it up, having it fast in the first place and so many steps in there she looked out of her depth, lost and to be honest… Like a fish out of water. She has so much more talent then that song let her show off!

My Score
4, not really her fault. The song ruined it, it didn’t sound like a Rumba and I have no idea why they used it. It ruined it for her to be honest!

I think 5s would have been fairer, I felt she was marked for what she COULD do not what she DID do. You can’t do that, it isn’t fair on others or her.

Mark & Iveta
Cha-Cha-Cha (U Can’t touch this – MC Hammer)

Now what can I say about Mark? I think people are too hard on him. Whatever Iveta teaches him he learns, he isn’t a professional so he isn’t going to complain about what she teaches him, but he does learn what she teaches him and you can see he works hard. YES he puts a lot into the performance but he IS a performer and he’s just playing to his strength, but he is learning. People act like he isn’t trying and he’s just messing about, I don’t think he is. Was this a Cha-Cha-Cha? Probably not, he did a few really good Cha-Cha moves (from this inexperienced eye) but there was too much hip-hop. She did this with their Salsa. She needs to stop it. Mark CAN dance, yes he can’t dance as well as the best SCD Celebs have but he CAN do it. Teach him a proper Latin Iveta! Let us see what moves he really has.

My Score
5 for sheer effort. He didn’t do a bad job, no matter what people say. Was it a Cha-Cha? I don’t know, to be honest most of the Latin dances look the same to me, what I could tell was authentic Cha-Cha he did well.

Over marked, though also under marked from Craig. I think 4s or 5s was a much better and fairer score. Over marking him won’t help him, no one likes it when they over mark but maybe this is their “thing” now with “bad” dancers (not that Mark is bad) be too nice so no one sympathy votes.

Ashley & Ola
Viennese Waltz (Angel – Sarah McLachlan)

I like Ashley, and so far I’ve been impressed with him and Ola’s choreography. Not this week I’m afraid. After Kevin’s”not” Viennese Waltz last week I was hoping for a better one this week from Ola, unfortunately I was let down. Too much out of hold. Looked like a Waltz not a Viennese Waltz. I can’t be the only person that misses seeing celebs really struggle with the rotation of the dance? The Viennese Waltz used to be a struggle for the celebs but one that produced many a beautiful dance even from celebs that were only ever “average”. What he did dance he danced really well, but I just miss proper dancing, too much artsy fartsy for me.

My Score
It is difficult. For any ballroom that looks like it could be one of a hundred dances I usually give a 2 so unfortunately I’m giving it 2 but he was good. Really improving.*

Over marked. For what it was it was a lovely dance but it wasn’t a Viennese Waltz and something sticks in my throat when I think of some of the average/below average performances that were ripped apart that were proper, full on Viennese Waltz’s. It is the one thing that annoys me about a few pro dancers is that their choreography is very contemporary and arty but lose the actual dance within it but get marked high, then a not so good celeb does a whole proper dance and gets marked down for getting it wrong but no credit for doing the full dance.

Julien & Janette
Salsa (Spice up your life – Spice Girls)

From the minute he came out on the dance floor you could see that he is loving the whole experience. That is the one thing I love about Julien, he annoys me but he loves it and I always respect someone who loves learning the dances. Unfortunately, it is still Julien. He tried so hard though and you could see him trying but he has no musicality, he goes off time so often and he gets over excited and becomes erratic all the time. I feel bad because if it was based off of who was loving the experience I’d want Julien in till the final week as he is a joy to see enjoying himself. I just don’t think there is much more he could do! He has no rhythm at all.

My Score
3. If it was based off enthusiasm then I’d give him 20 every week. I feel he is the weakest (joint with Dave) and only his enthusiasm is a joy to watch so unlike Dave he doesn’t really excite me.

Slightly over marked but not by much. On average about right, the 7 was too much I think 5s would have been better.

Rachel & Pasha
Quickstep (Johnny Got a Boom – Imelda May)

Ohhh Rachel. I love her, she works so hard but I feel her confidence has been drowned. Two weeks of Latin and she just feels to me like she needs to be built up all over again. This Quickstep did not help, too much faffing about, why was she in trousers? The little bit of Quickstep she did was alright but the trousers showed every wrong moment. I love her but that was just…. She couldn’t do it. I feel sorry for her but hoping for better next week. Get rid of the props Pasha and get the girl doing what she’s good at!

My Score
4. A lot like Fiona there was just something that didn’t work out there. I like her a lot and she could do so much more but it just failed this week. Poor Rachel.

Over scored in my opinion, I think Craig’s 5 was about right. Again it is nothing personal but I don’t think it deserved a 7.

Ben & Kristina
Salsa (Hard to Handle – The Black Crowes)

What a waste of a dance. Walking to the car he had no rhythm and was wooden as a board, the rest of the dance bar one or two moments he didn’t move and Kristina just gyrated around him. Ben IS getting the dances so I have no idea why she didn’t let him dance! It was a total waste of an opportunity!

My Score
2. I just wished he had danced!

Yeah… Alright. So quick advice to everyone else, stand still and have your partner dance around you and you’ll get 8s. What the heck?!

Deborah & Robin
Jive (Making your Mind up – Bucks Fizz)

So much promise, not really her dance! To be honest by the end I think the skirt underneath didn’t do her any favours at all but it was flat footed, no sharp kicks and lacked any real energy. I predicted before hand that I didn’t think it was going to be her dance the moment I heard she was doing it and I wasn’t let down on that. A good effort though and you could see her determination. This dance was hardly ever going to be her thing though, no offence to her (she’s great at nearly everything else!)

My Score
3. Wasn’t her dance and I think she was hindered by the pencil skirt under the other skirt.

About right, think it should probably have been all 5s. In line with other scoring tonight under marked!

Natalie & Artem
Quickstep (Yeah! – Usher)

Natalie can dance, there is no question to that, she can dance. With any other partner she’d be amazing, I really believe she would, she’s amazing WITH Artem. Please don’t get me wrong on this. I love the Quickstep though and I love it when it is fast, travels the floor and has great little pieces of Charleston in it. I didn’t like this. Not enough Quickstep, too much Jazz… I just didn’t like it. Well no I LIKED it but I didn’t feel it was a Quickstep. Natalie did wonderful and she’s on another level to the others but for me it wasn’t a Quickstep.

My Score
2. For the same reason as Ashley. It looked like a freestyle ballroom with Jazz. It was great and what she did was great just like Ashley but for me personally it wasn’t a Quickstep.*

Fair score, and about time someone talked about faffing about, too much in too many dances this year. As I said fair enough though.

Patrick & Anya
Cha-Cha-Cha (Mercy – Duffy)

This man can dance. I think he is awesome, in fact he does so well I have to say he’s the dark horse of the series. I think he could win it, he might find himself in the dance off once but as long as it isn’t against one of the “Golden” Females from this year he’ll get through quite easily (unless he’s had a terrible week) and people will pick up voting for him. I enjoy his dancing and think he is really one to watch!

My Score
7 as I think he was amazing but I do feel that he still has a long way to go. Like him and think he’ll go all the way!

Slightly over marked but based on the marking of the night not so much to be fair. He was the best Latin dance of the night (so far) and by far the most natural male.

Abbey & Aljaz
Tango (Spectrum – Florence and the Machine)

A bit of a different Tango, the musicality was there but I would have preferred a better song choice, she was sharp and quite awesome but it felt slow and soft because of the music. I think her Tango was pretty awesome but it didn’t all come together and I have to say that it fell a little flat. A great performance though.

My Score
7. I think the music let her down, not as badly as Fiona’s but it just stopped in my opinion such a great dance from being just that little bit better. I’m not a big fan of Abbey’s but she has the talent there and showed it this week.

About right, personally I think it was a point under Sophie’s but that is more performance and entertainment then dance quality which was high on both of them so in all fair.

Dave & Karen
Waltz (Take it to the limit – Eagles)

No fun and frolics this week and YES he was GOOD! When I say good I don’t mean top class of course but give a man credit when it is deserved. It was a pretty good attempt at the Waltz, for me I just LOOK at Dave and I can see the problem. He isn’t balanced at all and he isn’t really able to hear and dance to the music. This doesn’t mean he isn’t trying because he really is, he can’t help the way he is but he isn’t graceful and he isn’t really dancer material but I like him because he tries and he did a decent enough attempt.

My Score
2. Worst dance of the night but again if it was for effort and enthusiasm it would be over 100 somewhere.

I don’t know I think it is about right, he should have been below Fiona but about right. Him and Julien are about equal terms to be honest so not much to complain about.

Susanna & Kevin
Samba (Whenever, Wherever – Shakira)

I am no fan of Susanna or Kevin, I think Kevin over dances and out dances Susanna and I think even though she’s good she’s not AS good as the judges make her out to be. She’s on par with Patrick just a little behind on Sophie and Abbey. I don’t think she’s the most natural of the four of them to be honest but she works hard and, for lack of a better word, forces out quite a great performance. I think Patrick gets it naturally but I think Susanna has to work for the natural look. This week it didn’t work, it was a bit all over the place. The story made me laugh though and I loved the beginning of it. A bit wild, but a lot of fun. Though someone really messed up the tan and make up!

My Score
6. Great dance but basic and as I said wild. Kevin is having a lot of fun though with Susanna and that is what matters.

Slightly over marked, deserved 6s or 7s. Good try though.

Leader board

35 = Sophie & Brendan (Foxtrot)
= Natalie & Artem (Quickstep)
= Abbey & Aljaz (Tango)
33 = Patrick & Anya (Cha-Cha-Cha)
31 = Ashley & Ola (V.Waltz)
= Ben & Kristina (Salsa)
29 = Susanna & Kevin (Samba)
26 = Mark & Iveta (Cha-Cha-Cha)
= Rachel & Pasha (Quickstep)
23 = Julien & Janette (Salsa)
= Deborah & Robin (Jive)
= Dave & Karen (Waltz)
22 = Fiona & Anton (Rumba)

I enjoyed the night a lot, a vast improvement on last week. Still some dances seemed odd and the marking was all over the place. The leader board was about right with one or two positions I’d disagree with. In all it was a lovely night.

My personal favorite from all the dances was Sophie and Brendan, I loved the elegance of the Foxtrot. It was such a huge improvement from her Waltz in week one. She was so composed and the era of these dances suit her to a t! She needs to carry on just like this. Other ones I enjoyed were Ashley and Ola, Susanna and Kevin and of course the ever entertaining Mark and Iveta.

Natalie is on another planet and I didn’t dislike her dance I just thought Artems Choreography went too far from what I like to see as a Quickstep.

Julien, ohh Julien! He tries so hard but all he’s managed to do is….. Get even more over excited. He really has the spirit of the show within him.

Good week. Great competition so far!

*I thought I’d write this down here because you probably read what I wrote about Mark and think I’m being biased.

Personally I feel like a lot of Latin is very samey, I don’t like Latin dances so ANY celeb will get away with doing a “not so Salsa” salsa or a “Samba-ish” Cha-Cha. The only Latin dances I give 2s for the same I do for Ballroom is Paso and Jive because for me they are the most unique. I very rarely bother to rate Rumbas because they put me to sleep!  Just remember I’m not a professional and I base this on my opinion. Personally if I don’t think it looks like a dance doesn’t mean it isn’t what the dance was meant to be.

  1. Loved Sophie and Brendan 🙂 wonderful dance.

    You are being a lot nicer to some of those couples then you were on the forum Luc 😛 I think you don’t want to become unpopular online *BWAHAHAHAHA* or is that just me?

    The lovey dovey judges and over marking is starting to wind me the hell up, really can’t be bothered with the judges at the moment. Also not sure when it became normal for dances to look nothing like what they are meant to look like either? I mean a few years back some of these dances would have a stern word from Len and get really low marks. Now they are getting tons of praise and 9s.
